Even though hinges are hardly visible, they are an important part of door and household hardware. Their function is not just limited to making it possible to open and close the door. They also help to support the door, a heavier door will need a stronger studier hinge to support it. Hinges may also play a role in the interior design of the house. Some hinges are quite visible and have unique colors which make them stand out. There are many different types of hinges of different sizes suitable for different types of doors and styles.

Since one of the primary functions of hinges is to support the door, hinges are sometimes categorized by their strength, durability and suitability for certain applications. For example, there are specialty, commercial or heavy duty, spring and ball bearing hinges. Residential door hinges are suitable for lightweight applications such as the doors inside your house. These types of door hinges are not suitable for heavy and commercial applications. Commercial or heavy duty door hinges are suitable for heavy duty applications such as in a busy office or shop. They have a design that is robust and durable and will therefore last long despite being overused.

Some hinges can become noisy after being used for some time. This can be annoying and irritating especially for rooms where silence is important. The ball bearing hinge tries to solve this problem using the bearing mechanism that considerably reduces the chance that the hinge will be noisy. This type of hinge is suitable for home study room or office.

Another type of a hinge is the spring hinge. The spring hinge has a spring that will close back the door every time someone leaves it open. This type of hinge is suitable for your house’s external door which you would want to remain closed in order to maintain the internal temperature of your house or to keep out pets. Specialty door hinges are door hinges with characteristics that are very hard to find, such as hinges with a combination of round and square corner.

The material used to design the hinge plays a role in the choice and function of the hinge. Heavy duty hinges are made of brass which is sturdier than other materials like steel. Most residential doors will do with ordinary hinges, but heavier and taller doors need stronger hinges to support them.

Hinges also come in different sizes, depending on their application. Smaller hinges of about 3-4 inches are used for cabinet doors. While the 6 inches hinge are for closet doors. Larger and heavier doors will of course require even larger hinges to support them adequately. Gates have their own special kind of hinge.
